Business Tax Registration Certificate (BTRC) — Los Angeles
Any business operating in the City of Los Angeles — including restaurants — must register with the Office of Finance and obtain a BTRC.
What it is. The City of Los Angeles Business Tax Registration Certificate (BTRC) — the city business registration every operator must hold.
Who issues it. City of Los Angeles — Office of Finance (City layer).
When you need it. Before or when you begin doing business in the city; applies to any operating business regardless of food prep.
How to apply. Register online via the Office of Finance / LA Business Navigator. A temporary BTRC prints immediately; the permanent certificate arrives by mail. You may also be prompted for Police/Fire/Tobacco permits.
Fees. Business tax is based on gross receipts — see the Office of Finance fee/tax rates (⟢ VERIFY current schedule).
Renewal. Annual business-tax renewal — see the separate renewal article.
What SpoonSeal tracks. The document(s) you upload for this requirement, with automatic renewal/expiration tracking (Current, Due Soon, Expired). Where the city publishes health-inspection results (e.g., NYC and Chicago), SpoonSeal syncs them automatically; elsewhere they can be added manually.
